Christmas at the Monastery of Santa Cruz
Title
Christmas at the Monastery of Santa Cruz
Description
The Monastery of Santa Cruz at Coimbra was a major center of Portuguese music during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The Toronto Consort, guest-directed by the early music specialist and lutenist Žak Ozmo, performs villancicos and dances, found in the Monastery’s archives, on contemporary instruments (including lute, viola da gamba, harpsichord, baroque guitar, and theorbo). The video contextualizes the performance--already tied to the Monastery of Santa Cruz through its choice of repertoire--with photographs of the Monastery. It further emphasizes the historically informed character of the performance by highlighting an introductory scholarly lecture that takes place before performances.
